Balkans (Europe)
Teppan

Covered with goatskin on each end, this is a cylinder drum from Macedonia. To produce sound, one of the heads is struck with a heavy stick yielding a deep, rich tone, while the other head is struck with a much lighter stick or switch producing a higher, thinner tone. The entire Balkan region and portions of the Arabic world use this drum, or a very similar style of drum, for their traditional music and dance. This drum has the ability to make you move, and traditionally will accompany up to 50 dancers twirling, spinning and jumping with lightening speed and precision.

The WORLD BEATS video features live, costumed performances of ancient, ethnic, percussive traditions. Aaron Plunkett puts it all together in this fascinating 33 minute program. SEE MORE...
